LEGISLATIVE/REGULATORY UPDATE
As of: January 11, 2008

This page will be updated periodically during the next 90 days of the General Assembly in order for members to have access to current legislative and regulatory information.

The 425th session of the Maryland General Assembly began on January 9, 2008 with a whimper instead of the expected Bang! It was obvious that legislators are burned out from November’s special session that was called by Governor O’Malley to address the state’s budget deficit.

Seventy-eight House bills and 38 Senate bills were prefiled. As of today, none appear to affect the hound sports.

Of interest, however, is the 2007-2008 Maryland Hunting and Trapping Guide in which both Governor O’Malley and DNR Secretary John Griffin have written letters that indicate their support of hunting and trapping (included with this report). This is encouraging since this time last year we really didn’t have any idea what the new governor’s position would be on hunting.

Message From the Secretary of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources 2008

In general, we visit with legislators during the General Assembly session and distribute our legislative drop piece. Throughout the year, we continually peruse newspapers online on a daily basis, routinely check animal rights websites, and maintain contact with DNR to keep on top of any issues that could affect MAWC.

The Maryland General Assembly’s website, www.mlis.state.md.us, is packed with all sorts of information.  You can find status of legislation, bill hearings, legislators’ biographical information, contact information, and much, much more.
